Pie and Honors for the team

Last night the athletic department hosted it's annual athletic awards banquet.  We applauded and cheered  as the honors rolled out for Whitman's athletes in all their endeavors, as well as their coaches who have been recognized by the NWC as the best in the conference at what they do.  We celebrated Malcolm Dunn's vast accomplishments building the men's and women's cross-country programs as he moves on from Whitman to the next phase in his life.  It truly is amazing to sit and recognize the sheer accomplishments our athletes at Whitman compile in the course of a year----and over the course of four years.

This was a chance for the team to gather once again,  among their peers and be recognized as the amazing group of female student-athletes they really are.  The following 2009 team members received very special recognition for their work in the classroom, while also being dedicated athletes.  All of them have a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher----not a small feat at Whitman College!

Alex Graves, Brea Robirds, Katie Richards, and Amanda Holberg all received this incredible honor as NWC Scholar-Athletes!  We will be adding to this list as the second semester grades for the freshmen class are not yet in....

Katie Richards, furthermore earned herself the incredible honor of being among the top five student-athletes at Whitman College, based on GPA.  She was the only female athlete in this prestigious group.  Katie was not with us last night, currently wrapping up an incredible semester abroad in Tanzania.

The entire team was also honored by being nominated for the second straight year for the George Ball Sportsmanship Award---last year we were the lucky recipients of this award, and the men's tennis team deservedly walked away with it this time.

Yes, there was pie (and lots of it!), and we all had an enjoyable evening before finals get underway.

A parting shot of our two seniors; Brea Robirds and Alex Graves.
